Does Your Child Have Cow Milk Sensitivity?

If your child has ever had symptoms of gas, bloating, colic, diarrhea or constipation after drinking cows milk, it’s possible he/she has a sensitvity. My youngest son, Alex has always had difficulty digesting cow milk products. At birth, he had a tongue tie and difficulty breastfeeding. I was forced to supplement with formula, which his tummy didn’t like at all! It took us many rough months of colic to figure it all out. So, what do you do if your child has cow milk sensitivity and how do you know??

Does Your Child Have Cow Milk Sensitivity?

When your little one has an upset tummy, it’s no fun for anyone. Unfortunately, figuring out the problem can be like detective work. Is it an allergy to food, a stomach virus, lactose intolerance or cow milk sensitivity? It’s always a good idea to visit your doctor if it’s an ongoing issue.

Allergy Versus Sensitivity

Although it may seem like allergies and sensitivities are one and the same, they’re not. A true food allergy causes an immune response, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. If you or your child has an allergy to food or drinks, you may develop hives, rash, tingling in the mouth or throat and anaphalaxis in severe cases. On the other hand, a food intolerance or sensitivity is usally less severe and most often creates digestive upset. Either way, you’ll want to avoid trigger foods.

Allergy Testing

For a definitive answer to the question: “Is it an allergy or intolerance?” you may want to visit an allergist for testing. I took my son Alex for allergy testing. Surprisingly, he was allergic to nearly every environmental trigger, but not to any foods. Regardless, Alex cannot eat seafood or cow milk products without having a terrible reaction. I’ve sat up all night with him on more than one occassion while he vomitted for hours after eating seafood or drinking cow milk.

Cow Milk Alternative

Luckily, after struggling for years with Alex’s intolerances, we’ve discovered a variety of alternatives that allow him to enjoy food like a kid again. One of the things he’s always liked is yogurt. Unfortunately Alex would often get an upset tummy after eating yogurt made from cows milk. We tried coconut milk yogurt and he really wasn’t a fan. Then we discovered KABRITA Goat Milk Yogurt and Fruit. Alex really LOVES this stuff and he doesn’t have a tummy ache after eating it. WIN-WIN! 😀
