Gardening for Family Health

Even if you’ve never tried your hand at gardening, IT IS POSSIBLE to grow your own healthy fruit and vegetables! Much of the food we purchase from the supermarket is tainted with pesticides and chemicals. You want to keep your family healthy, and that is why growing your own food hydroponically & organically is the perfect solution. Gardening for family health may sound time consuming, but it can be simple. One thing I’ve learned over the past few years is that if you want your kids to start eating healthier, the best thing to do is to get them involved in the growing process.

I will show you how simple it can be to grow your own food and start gardening for family healthy.  Once you have your garden growing, you will be amazed to see your family eating healthier. Not only that, but when you’re gardening for family health you can feel good knowing that you are all eating healthy, pesticide-free food. One of the best things to do is to get your kids involved in the process. We enjoy giving our kids seeds and letting them plant them. The kids have helped us along the way, and they love it too! All you need to do is encourage your kids to help with the gardening process and healthier eating will follow right along.

Here are a few things to think about before you get started:

  1. Decide what types of food you’d like to grow
  2. Determine which method you would like to use
  3. Buy seeds or seedlings
  4. Plant your seeds or seedlings
  5. Tend your Garden
  6. Enjoy your harvest

Decide what to Grow

I enjoy fresh salads and making my own homemade salsa. I also like having fresh fruit on hand for my kids to enjoy. I typically choose what to grow based on the time of year and what my family enjoys eating. My family trusts Burpee when it comes to seeds and plants. If you want to see a list of different vegetables, fruit and herbs to help you decide what to grow, visit Burpee.com. Don’t forget to get your kids involved in this part of the process as well. Let them choose a couple things they are excited about. Once your family has decided what to grow, you can begin gardening for family health.

Determine Your Growing Method

When you think of gardening, the first thing that comes to mind is probably planting in the soil. While that is a common method to growing, it’s not your only option when it comes to gardening for family health. If you’re looking for a different method, you should consider hydroponics. There are many great hydroponic systems available for purchase. Please read my review of hydroponic systems for more information. There are many easy, pre-made systems available. One great thing about growing hydroponically is that you will have faster growing plants and larger yields. You can also stick with standard organic soil gardening. One method that I am particularly fond of is the Food 4 Wealth process, which is based on ecology rather than horticulture. You can read my article: Start a Garden for more information about this method as well.

Buy Seeds or Seedlings

You can head to your local garden store to purchase seeds or plants for your garden, or you can order online. As I mentioned before, my family trusts Burpee so that is typically where we go when it’s time to buy seeds for our garden. We have ordered from other online sources as well. Another good source for ordering seeds is The Cook’s Garden. They also have a great selection of seeds and plants to choose from.

Plant Your Seeds

Once you have your seeds or plants in hand, it’s time to start gardening for family health. This is really where the fun begins. If you have chosen to plant seeds, you will need to get them started. Don’t forget to have your children help you each step of the way. This is where they get excited about healthy eating. Some seeds are direct sow seeds, but not all seeds will grow well this way. Be sure to do your research. Here’s a link to Burpee’s Direct Sow Seeds If you purchase regular seeds, you will need a seed-starter kit. Here are links to The Cook’s Garden seed starting kits and Burpee’s seed starting kits. This will help you get started. Once your seeds have sprouted, you can move them to your outside location in the ground or hydroponic system.

Tend Your Garden

If you have chosen to grow hydroponically or using the Food 4 Wealth method, your garden should be low maintenance. If you have a hydroponic system, you will need to check the pH once a week and make adjustments if necessary. You will also want to add organic fertilizer to your hydroponic system as well. If you’re growing in the ground, you will just need to check to make sure your plants are growing well without problems. Some minor pruning may be needed, but it shouldn’t take too much time. Since you’re gardening for family healthy, it’s important to let each member of the family get involved in the process. It should be fun, let it be an enjoyable family hobby.

Enjoy Your Harvest

Now that you’ve gotten through all the steps, it should be time to enjoy your harvest. Let everyone in your family taste the healthy produce you’ve all grown together. Find new recipes, and let the kids help you prepare the fruit and veggies in a fun and exciting way. What are you waiting for?

Let us know if you have any questions or if we can help you along the way. Get growing and enjoy gardening for family health!
