Backyard Gardening Phenomenon
Homegrown food is quickly becoming the way of the future. From a simple garden to more complex hydroponic and aquaponic systems, there’s an amazing backyard gardening phenomenon taking place. Every day consumers deal with the rising cost of groceries and the realization that commercial gardeners are over-using pesticide in our produce.
The incredible thing about this backyard gardening phenomenon is that it just keeps growing. Typical families are beginning to realize they can grow healthy, delicious, pesticide-free food easily right in their own backyard. This trend is rapidly multiplying and the newest movement in backyard gardening is hydroponics.
My family lives in Florida and sometimes the summer heat is intense. We have found that using a combination of soil gardening and hydroponics works well for our garden. We begin choosing what to grow during the winter, and then start ordering seeds and sprouts as spring approaches. We plant our chosen produce both in the soil and hydroponic containers. It’s amazing to see the difference in growth rates between the two. Our hydroponic gardens grow rapidly and start producing fruit and vegetables very quickly, while the soil plants tend to grow slow and steady.
The backyard gardening phenomenon has been amazing for our family. We begin harvesting produce from our hydroponic garden and enjoying the “fruits” of our labor by mid-spring, thanks to the rapid growth of hydroponics. Then, as the heat rises our focus turns to the soil garden. The heat gets so intense that some of the hydroponic tanks retain excessive heat, which does not properly support proper plant growth. By this point, our soil garden has been steadily growing and is beginning to produce a good supply.
The amazing thing about this backyard gardening phenomenon is that you will find yourself visiting the produce aisle at your local supermarket less and less. Growing your own food can dramatically lower your grocery bill. You will also notice that your diet is now healthier. You naturally find yourself eating healthy food more often with a good variety to choose from every day. Your dinner plate will always be exciting, fresh and new!
